Chocolate, perfume, champagne and mobile phones, but not on Valentine’s Day!

~ New research suggests that, while women think mobiles are good gifts, woe betide the man that gives one on February 14 ~

Research produced by online mobile phone retailer mPhone.co.uk has shown that women value a mobile phone as gift a more highly than men do. The research shows that this is true on birthdays, at Christmas and on most other occasions, but just not on Valentine’s Day!

Although the survey says that 54% of women think a phone is a good gift for a partner at any time of year, only 16.7% of women believe a mobile is a good gift on February 14. However, more than twice as many separated people than married people think a partner might like to un-wrap a mobile on Valentine’s Day.

"It would be a pretty typical bloke thing to buy a girl a mobile as a Valentine," explained Ruth Hendry, a 27 year old teacher from Bristol. "The trouble is, and this is what men don't quite 'get', girls want romance at this time of year. A phone is great for a birthday or occasional present, but not February 14! Even chocolates, flowers or perfume are better - although they are a bit on the unimaginative side," she concluded.

“It’s clear from our customer feedback that people like giving their partners and loved ones phones as gifts,” explained Ali Mahmoud, managing director of mPhone.co.uk. “It’s a way of saying ‘I care about you, please keep in touch’. However, it looks like it might be best to steer clear of phones for one day of the year. Perhaps we should have a national mobile day to make up for it?” he laughed.

The research on which this survey is based involved telephone interviews with a representative sample of 1000 UK adults. It was broken down by sex, marital status, employment status, income earning status, number of children in the household, socio economic group, ISBA (Incorporated Society of British Advertisers) region, TV region and age. It was conducted by NEMS Market Research and a full copy is available on request.
