Choosing a stylish phone

~ A simple guide to high tech buying ~

Choosing a mobile phone is not an easy task – particularly if you want to stay up to date with the very latest in technology and get prompt and efficient service when you buy. However, online retail outlet www.mphone.co.uk now provides both, with an emphasis on the very latest, high quality phones, at a discount to high street shops.

Founded by investment banker Ali Mahmoud, mPhone uses the retail model that dominates outside the UK. One simply chooses a SIM card free phone and inserts an existing chip in order to keep the original phone number. Chips can be obtained by the customer from any service provider, such as Orange, O2, Vodafone or T-Mobile. As a result, the phone’s owner is free to change handsets as often as he or she likes – without having to adopt a new mobile phone number or keep track of contract-expiry dates.

The most advanced features to look for on a phone at the moment include PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) like functions such as the ability to open Microsoft Office documents and send and check e-mail on the move. Broadband like, ultra fast, 3G Internet surfing is also available as is video calling using your mobile. If you are interested in video calling, make sure you choose a phone with a camera on both sides of its body – so you can see the person you are calling on your screen and let them see you at the same time. Most phones have a camera only on the reverse side (because they are designed only for taking photos). When you use this kind of phone you have to hold it with the screen facing away from you. As a result, the caller can see you but you can’t see them – some video call!

If you want the best of the bunch, perhaps as a gift this winter, the Sony Ericsson P990i is perfect. It has all the features mentioned above and retails for just £479.40, including VAT. UK customers can also buy the P990i from mPhone with either an O2 or Vodafone contract, at a subsidised price, or without a SIM. Suddenly, choosing the right phone seems a lot simpler.
