Out of the handset frying pan into the fire – letter to the editor

This letter was issued to selected journalists within the telecommunications field

Dear Sir,

Noriaki Ito, head of strategy at NTT DoCoMO has recently raised concerns about the incentive system for buying mobile phones. However, it’s unfortunate that the concerns are raised only in response to profit issues at carrier level and not as a reply to the changing patterns of consumer behaviour.

Some very strong independent businesses have always sold consumers handsets using the business model more dominant in the US and Arabic countries. In this system one simply buys a phone and then attaches a contract. The benefits for the consumer are rife. Early adopters can change phone as often as they like, while price sensitive customers can opt for a cheap handset that is paid for only in initial outlay.

The fundamental problem with the hybrid payment system suggested by Mr Iko is that customers will pay more for their handsets – not less. I am reminded of Dickens’ Fagin inviting Oliver Twist into his gang, explaining how much better life would be in fire, compared to the frying pan. However, I would temper this by stressing that DoCoMo is without question amongst the most progressive businesses in the industry – at least it is raising the issue of handset pricing.

Best regards,

Ali Mahmoud

Mobile use for work high - but only among men

~ Women more likely to see a phone as a tool for staying in touch with family, according to survey ~

Men are more likely to use their mobile phone for work related tasks while women are more likely to use it to stay in touch with their family. These are the findings of an independent survey produced by online mobile phone retailer mPhone.co.uk.

Nearly 28% of men see their mobile phones as ‘primarily a tool for work’ compared to only 7.7% of women who feel the same. Almost 50% of women view a mobile as a way of staying in touch with family members, while only 35% of men share their opinion. Meanwhile, both genders seem to perceive the social functions of a phone similarly, with 24.1% of men and 23.6% of women viewing a phone as a way of organising their social lives. Only 2.4% of men see a phone as a fashion item while a fraction of one per cent of women feel the same.

“Despite the survey suggesting that people don’t see their phones as fashion items there is a powerful, fashion industry led and heavily financially supported, move in this direction,” explained Ali Mahmoud, managing director of mPhone. “The trade is beginning to make inroads towards changing this view with last year’s release of the Motorola D&G (Dolce & Gabbana) phone and more recently with Prada's entry into the mobile phone market, in partnership with LG. This is an inexorable movement and my prediction is that a survey similar to this in two years time would show radically increased interest in the mobile as a fashion item.”

Advances in technology such as the introduction of direct push functionality, which allows e-mail to be downloaded to a phone as it arrives, have made using a mobile for work easier. Many phones now also incorporate spreadsheets and word processing software, functionality which has previously been confined to PDAs and mobile PCs.

“Traditionally men in the UK have been more focused on work than women,” continued Mahmoud. “Of course, this is a sweeping generalisation but does give us a starting point from which to work when analysing the results of our survey. The key is that the respondents described the ‘primary’ function they see their phones fulfilling, not the only function. As a result, this survey doesn’t show that women don’t use phones for work, or that men use phones only for business. More interestingly, it indicates the attitude each gender has towards a tool that can be used in many, many ways. One thing is certain - using a mobile for work isn’t restricted to London or other cities, it seems common amongst men across the UK.”

Popular mobile phones from the mPhone Web site that are well suited to work use include the HTC-Advantage X7500, the Blackberry 8800 Pearl and the HTC-S710 Pocket PC phone. The last of these incorporates a slide out QWERTY keyboard, another tool which proves popular amongst business and enterprise users.

The research on which this survey is based involved telephone interviews with a representative sample of 1000 UK adults and was broken down by sex, marital status, employment status, income earning status, number of children in household, socio economic group, ISBA (Incorporated Society of British Advertisers) region, TV region and age. A full copy of this research is available on request. It was conducted independently by NEMs market research on behalf of mPhone. Case studies of men who use their phones for business or women who use their phones for primarily social purposes are available on demand.

Chocolate, perfume, champagne and mobile phones, but not on Valentine’s Day!

~ New research suggests that, while women think mobiles are good gifts, woe betide the man that gives one on February 14 ~

Research produced by online mobile phone retailer mPhone.co.uk has shown that women value a mobile phone as gift a more highly than men do. The research shows that this is true on birthdays, at Christmas and on most other occasions, but just not on Valentine’s Day!

Although the survey says that 54% of women think a phone is a good gift for a partner at any time of year, only 16.7% of women believe a mobile is a good gift on February 14. However, more than twice as many separated people than married people think a partner might like to un-wrap a mobile on Valentine’s Day.

"It would be a pretty typical bloke thing to buy a girl a mobile as a Valentine," explained Ruth Hendry, a 27 year old teacher from Bristol. "The trouble is, and this is what men don't quite 'get', girls want romance at this time of year. A phone is great for a birthday or occasional present, but not February 14! Even chocolates, flowers or perfume are better - although they are a bit on the unimaginative side," she concluded.

“It’s clear from our customer feedback that people like giving their partners and loved ones phones as gifts,” explained Ali Mahmoud, managing director of mPhone.co.uk. “It’s a way of saying ‘I care about you, please keep in touch’. However, it looks like it might be best to steer clear of phones for one day of the year. Perhaps we should have a national mobile day to make up for it?” he laughed.

The research on which this survey is based involved telephone interviews with a representative sample of 1000 UK adults. It was broken down by sex, marital status, employment status, income earning status, number of children in the household, socio economic group, ISBA (Incorporated Society of British Advertisers) region, TV region and age. It was conducted by NEMS Market Research and a full copy is available on request.

Research says Santa’s sack is set to ring this Christmas

~ New research from online mobile retailer mPhone suggests teenagers and young people want phones for Christmas ~

Sales of mobile phones are looking positive in the run up to Christmas this year, according to a survey conducted by NEMS market research on behalf of online mobile phone retailer mPhone.co.uk. A whopping 75.9% of 16-24 year olds claimed that mobile phones make good Christmas presents, while over 56% of the overall population concurred. The figures were also high among parents with one or two children, suggesting that Santa’s sack could be ringing as he climbs down the chimney this year.

The research shows that Christmas is perceived to be the best time of year to give a mobile phone as gift, with 56% of the overall population agreeing. The festive season is followed by birthdays (55%), Mother’s Day or Father’s Day (27%) and Valentines Day (18%). Intriguingly, although only 18% of people feel that a phone is a good gift for a partner on Valentine’s Day, 52% think they are a good gift for a partner at any time of year. This suggests that the mobile phone is firmly ensconced in the most popular presents of the year along side other gifts such as the latest games console, iPods and digital radios.

“Christmas really is a time for family,” explained Ali Mahmoud, managing director of mPhone. “I believe that’s why phones are such seasonable gifts – the festive period is the one time above all others when people want to be with their loved ones. I think that when you give someone a phone you are really saying stay in touch,” he continued.

”I think there’s another serious message here too. The right phone can be a very powerful ally for a parent. Certainly, children and teenagers will spend a few pounds sending texts to their friends, but they will also be safer on the streets over Christmas and New Year.

“Our most popular phones are proving to be the Nokia 1110, Samsung D900, Nokia 6230i and Sony Ericsson K800i at the moment. In many ways these represent a cross section of the market. The Nokia 1110 is a simple talk and text phone, ideal for younger teenagers, while the Sony Ericsson K800i is a perfect gadget lovers phones.”

The research on which this survey is based involved telephone interviews with a representative sample of 1000 UK adults and was broken down by sex, marital status, employment status, income earning status, number of children in household, socio economic group ISBA (Incorporated Society of British Advertisers) region, TV region and age. Surge in satellite phone rental to yachting market

~ Online mobile retailer reports growing interest in phones for remote areas ~

Online mobile phone retailer mPhone has reported increased interest from the yachting market in rental satellite phones this autumn. This increased awareness of satellite phone technology is believed to be the result of safety concerns, coupled with reluctance to buy the expensive phones, which can cost over £1000 each.

In contrast to the traditional model of buying a phone and paying for calls and line rental, mPhone offers simpler, more affordable rental solutions. The user pays a deposit before the phone is delivered and then post-pays the bill when the phone is returned. If the average usage surpasses a low, pre-agreed, level the line rental becomes free – otherwise it’s as little as one pound per day.

“We very much encourage our customers to actually use the phone and not pay line rental as a result,” explained Ali Mahmoud, managing director of mPhone. “If the user was on a long trip, say fifty days, and used the phone every day to the pre-agreed level, the cost would still only be 5% of the cost of buying a satellite phone. Furthermore, if you buy a phone you still have to pay call charges and rental on top of the purchase price. Finally, unlike a regular mobile phone, incoming calls to satellite phones are free,” explained Mahmoud.

“In addition, renting a satellite phone is much easier than people think,” he continued. “All the customer has to do is fill in a brief form on our Web site and click send. They will be sent a document to sign and return by fax or post. A couple of days before their trip a courier will arrive with the phone - it’s as simple as that,” continued Mahmoud.

“It makes sense to book the phone well in advance though. By doing this you can have your number supplied early on. As a result, you are able to let all the interested parties have it in plenty of time. This ensures the logistics of the journey run smoothly,” he concluded.

Satellite phones are rugged and mobile telephones designed for use in remote areas or situations where a normal mobile phone wouldn’t be able to provide network coverage. Most models offer SMS functionality similar to a regular mobile phone as well as data capability, allowing users to access e-mail and surf the Web wherever they are. The mPhone range includes the Inmarsat mini-M, with voice fax and data services and the Iridium satellite phone, one of the smallest phones on the market.

Choosing a stylish phone

~ A simple guide to high tech buying ~

Choosing a mobile phone is not an easy task – particularly if you want to stay up to date with the very latest in technology and get prompt and efficient service when you buy. However, online retail outlet www.mphone.co.uk now provides both, with an emphasis on the very latest, high quality phones, at a discount to high street shops.

Founded by investment banker Ali Mahmoud, mPhone uses the retail model that dominates outside the UK. One simply chooses a SIM card free phone and inserts an existing chip in order to keep the original phone number. Chips can be obtained by the customer from any service provider, such as Orange, O2, Vodafone or T-Mobile. As a result, the phone’s owner is free to change handsets as often as he or she likes – without having to adopt a new mobile phone number or keep track of contract-expiry dates.

The most advanced features to look for on a phone at the moment include PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) like functions such as the ability to open Microsoft Office documents and send and check e-mail on the move. Broadband like, ultra fast, 3G Internet surfing is also available as is video calling using your mobile. If you are interested in video calling, make sure you choose a phone with a camera on both sides of its body – so you can see the person you are calling on your screen and let them see you at the same time. Most phones have a camera only on the reverse side (because they are designed only for taking photos). When you use this kind of phone you have to hold it with the screen facing away from you. As a result, the caller can see you but you can’t see them – some video call!

If you want the best of the bunch, perhaps as a gift this winter, the Sony Ericsson P990i is perfect. It has all the features mentioned above and retails for just £479.40, including VAT. UK customers can also buy the P990i from mPhone with either an O2 or Vodafone contract, at a subsidised price, or without a SIM. Suddenly, choosing the right phone seems a lot simpler.
